About The Artwork

The universe, Carl Sagan once said, is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition. Standing at Tunnel View as Yosemite Valley ignited before me, I understood exactly what he meant. It began as a faint ember behind El Capitan, that great granite sentinel the Ahwahneechee called Tutokanula. Then the sky cracked open, flooding the valley they call the Incomparable Valley with a molten cascade of amber and crimson. Half Dome glowed like a forge. Bridalveil Fall shimmered in the distance, veiled in gold. The problem was the light itself. The vibrant sunrise, shining across Yosemite Valley, was so intense, so impossibly alive, that no single exposure could contain it. I bracketed furiously, chasing the dynamic range of a star rising over a cathedral carved by glaciers. Then they arrived, two ravens, sleek and deliberate, landing beside my tripod as casually as old friends. They tilted their heads, studying me with those intelligent, ink-black eyes. I laughed softly. They seemed to expect something. I explained, honestly, that I hadn't eaten yet either, and promised to bring bird seed next time. They considered this, nodded in that grave raven way, and eventually forgave me. John Muir called this place the Range of Light. Standing here, camera humming, ravens watching, I felt it. This image is a doorway. Step through it, and the valley breathes again in your home.
