About the artist

Morton Schamberg (1881–1918) was an American modernist painter, photographer, and sculptor known for his innovative depictions of machinery and industrial subjects. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied under William Merritt Chase. Schamberg traveled to Europe and was influenced by modern art movements, including Cubism and Fauvism. Around 1916, he developed a distinctive style featuring geometric forms and mechanical objects, becoming a pioneer of Precisionism in American art. He also explored photography, capturing urban architecture and everyday subjects. His promising career was cut short when he died during the 1918 influenza pandemic at the age of 36. Today, he is remembered for his contributions to early American modernism and his innovative exploration of industrial forms in art.
