Varuna
Descriptions:
Varuna by Anan Thathamma is an original 59.05 × 47.24 inch oil on canvas that evokes the ancient spirit of water and protection. Thick, sculpted layers of pigment form swirling reef-like formations, creating a sense of motion that feels like currents rising beneath the surface. Vivid blues, emerald greens, deep violets, gold, and flashes of magenta pulse across the composition, suggesting the dynamic force of oceans, monsoons, and unseen deities that govern them.
The painting carries a rhythmic energy. Each curl, ridge, and fold of color seems to breathe, hinting at mythic guardianship and the interconnected life concealed beneath the waves. Abstract forms emerge like shells, waves, and marine beings, then dissolve back into pure color and light. Varuna invites contemplation and reverence, making it an ideal statement piece for collectors who value spirituality, texture, and vibrant contemporary abstraction.

Varuna is a guardian of the west and is particularly associated with oceans and water. In this oil painting, I've delved into an abstract exploration of existence itself, blending futuristic visions with metaphysical musings. Vibrant hues twist and wind, symbolizing life's complex dance. It's a visual symphony meant to evoke wonder and encourage contemplation.

About the artist

Anan Thathamma was born in Prachinburi, Thailand, in 1969, where he spent the first 12 years of his schooling immersed in Buddhist teachings and Sanskrit studies while living in a temple. It was during this formative period that he developed a profound appreciation for art,
particularly religious and spiritual art.
Upon moving to Bangkok at the age of 18, Anan embarked on a journey to pursue his passion for art. Working in various roles to support himself, he sought formal art education at the esteemed Alliance Française. Anan's artistic journey reached a milestone with his debut public
exhibition, hosted at the prestigious Sukhothai Hotel in Bangkok. The
exhibition garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success, setting the
stage for his burgeoning career.
Subsequently, Anan's artwork gained recognition within the expatriate and international community through a members-only exhibition at the British Club of Bangkok. Embraced by Thailand's King Rama IX Art Foundation, he was selected to represent Thai contemporary art
on a global stage.
Anan's artistic process is deeply rooted in meditation and spirituality. Each
performance begins with meditative preparation, during which he paints with his
thumb, delving into a trance-like state until the artwork is completed. His
paintings serve as intricate cosmological narratives, seamlessly blending
figurative and abstract elements to evoke labyrinthine landscapes of the mind.
