About the artist

Susan Catherine Moore Waters (1823–1900) was an American self-taught painter born in Binghamton, New York. She began her artistic career creating commissioned portraits and later became known for her paintings of animals, pastoral landscapes, and still-life scenes. Despite having limited formal art training, Waters developed a distinctive folk art style and supported herself and her husband through her work. She spent much of her later career in Bordentown, New Jersey, and became recognized for her contributions to 19th-century American art.
