About The Artwork

By using water and avoiding the horizon line the artist can draw attention to the surface of the painting and the painting process itself. This is from a series of paintings based around the Teign Estuary in south Devon. The flat abstract quality of the water is retained in the painting creating a soft muted backdrop for the girl and the dog. The soft evening summer light helps create a luminosity to contrast with the background color. The title refers to the structure of the composition.

Born in Manchester. Studied art in Blackpool and Newcastle. Worked in the building trade for a decade, began teaching art in Leicester.

Artists Statement

Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
