About The Artwork
expand_more
Gérôme attributed the success of his animal paintings to his early studies at the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The soft handling and the unemphatic drawing in this painting are characteristic of Gérôme’s work from the 1880s. It was probably painted about 1884, when the artist exhibited another nocturnal scene featuring tigers, Night in the Desert, at the Paris Salon (now Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh).

About the artist

Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a French painter and sculptor born in Vesoul, France. He was one of the leading artists of the Academic art movement and became famous for his highly detailed paintings depicting historical events, classical mythology, and scenes of life in the Middle East and North Africa. Gérôme studied under Paul Delaroche and later became a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His works were widely admired for their technical precision, dramatic compositions, and realistic details. Among his best-known paintings are The Snake Charmer, Pollice Verso, and The Pasha's Pool. His influence extended throughout Europe and beyond, making him one of the most recognized academic artists of the 19th century.
