About The Artwork

This painting was set in front of a window overlooking the busy Rue Massena in Nice. The figure is against the light so only fragments of reflective material in this painting and the edges of the figure’s hair capture the strong summer light outside. The net curtain in the background also adds to the diffused quality of the light within the picture. To enhance the contre jour effect the artist has introduced a band of fluorescent yellow (acrylic)to mimic the effect of bright light entering the darker room and partially silhouetting the young girl.

Born in Manchester. Studied art in Blackpool and Newcastle. Worked in the building trade for a decade, began teaching art in Leicester.

Artists Statement

Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
