About the artist

William Glackens (1870–1938) was an American painter and illustrator known for his lively depictions of modern urban life. He was a founding member of the Ashcan School, an artistic movement that portrayed everyday scenes, city streets, parks, and ordinary people. Glackens later developed a brighter, more colorful style influenced by French Impressionism. His paintings often featured fashionable figures, outdoor leisure activities, and bustling city scenes. As a member of the group known as The Eight, he helped promote greater artistic freedom and a more realistic portrayal of American life in the early twentieth century.
