The Pilot's House, Sunderland Point
Descriptions:
The Pilot’s House, Sunderland Point by Chris Macauley is an original oil on canvas measuring 33.85 x 24 inches. The composition opens with an expansive sky that seems to stretch endlessly, its soft transitions of blue and grey capturing the calm weight of northern light. Along the horizon, a line of modest houses sits quietly against the shoreline, anchoring the vast space above them.
The brushwork is gentle and atmospheric, allowing the clouds to drift and shift like passing thoughts. Touches of green in the foreground offer balance and grounding, suggesting the relationship between land, sea, and the people who live in view of the elements. The overall mood is contemplative, evoking the quiet resilience of coastal life and the sense of shelter found in familiar places.

About The Artwork
expand_more
This painting is of the strip of land along the Lune Estuary that is cut off twice a day by the high tide. Known as Sunderland point or Sunderland village it used to be the port for Lancaster and the pilots house (small white building) on the highest point would wait and watch for ships ready to be guided into port. The low horizon line helps to express the wide-open space that you get from coastal windswept area such as this that is in a constant state of flux from the changeable weather and tide.

Artists Statement
Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
