About the artist

Theodor Philipsen (1840–1920) was a Danish painter, sculptor, and ceramic artist born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He initially studied agriculture but later pursued art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Known for his impressionistic paintings, Philipsen specialized in animals, particularly cattle, and landscapes. Inspired by French Impressionism, he developed a distinctive style characterized by vibrant colors, natural light, and expressive brushwork. His paintings of cattle grazing on the island of Saltholm became among his most celebrated works, and he played an important role in introducing Impressionist ideas to Danish art.
