About the artist

Jan Steen (1626–1679) was a Dutch painter best known for his lively, humorous scenes of everyday life, particularly chaotic households, taverns, and festive gatherings. Born in Leiden, Netherlands, he studied painting under artists including Jan van Goyen and Adriaen van Ostade. His works often depicted ordinary people engaged in amusing or disorderly situations, incorporating humor, moral lessons, and references to Dutch proverbs. Steen also painted biblical stories, mythological subjects, historical scenes, and portraits. In addition to his artistic career, he ran a brewery and later operated an inn. His paintings are celebrated for their expressive characters, intricate details, and vivid storytelling. The Dutch expression “a Jan Steen household” became a popular phrase describing a messy or disorderly home, reflecting the lively domestic scenes in his artwork. Today, he is regarded as one of the leading genre painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
