Before dawn, Yosemite Valley held its breath. I arrived in darkness, boots damp with valley dew, the crisp Sierra air carving clean lines through my lungs. Half Dome, the crown jewel of California's most celebrated national park, rose as a dark silhouette against a sky still deciding what to become. Then the sun broke from behind the granite ridge. A single starburst of light ignited the meadow grasses, sending silver threads across every blade. The valley, often called Earth's greatest cathedral, exhaled, and I pressed the shutter. What drew my eye most was the lone tree standing apart from the pine corridor to the east. Isolated, unhurried, rooted in the open meadow like a quiet philosopher. It anchored the frame in a way nothing else could. Every great landscape needs a solitary witness. I had always admired Ansel Adams' vision of this valley, where black and white strips away color's comfort and forces you to feel the architecture of light itself. I chose the same discipline.
