The Catch
Descriptions:
The Catch by Chris Macauley is an original oil on canvas measuring 33.85 x 33.85 inches. Three figures stand together at the water’s edge, their movements anchored in routine, memory, and the passing of knowledge. The soft blue surface of the tide reflects the figures and the simple boat, creating a mirror of time and tradition.
The rope coiled in the hands of the fishermen becomes a symbol of connection, linking generations in the quiet work of the sea. Macauley’s brushwork balances realism and abstraction, allowing details to dissolve gently into the water and light. The composition invites the viewer to step into the scene and witness a shared moment of labor, mentorship, and subtle dignity.

This painting depicts three traditional Devonshire fishermen tying up their catch from the Teign Estuary. The Artist has focused on the luminous green bag with the wide range of intense blues that fill the picture. The calm waters are agitated by the breeze, creating striations across the composition, contrasting with the offset positioning of the men.

Artists Statement
Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
