The Battle
Descriptions:
The Battle by Chris Macauley is an original oil on canvas measuring 29.92 × 48.03 inches. The work presents a theatrical still life, where a handcrafted carousel of miniature horses and scattered shields becomes a stage for quiet conflict. Layers of pastel blues, soft pinks, and muted greys form a dreamlike world, suspended between childhood invention and adult reflection. A wooden studio figure stands nearby, echoing the posture of a silent observer, while a single turquoise orb anchors the scene with calm balance.
The composition invites viewers to consider the struggles we construct in our minds and the delicate balance between imagination, nostalgia, and reality. This piece offers collectors a sophisticated blend of narrative depth, technical finesse, and subtle emotional resonance.

About The Artwork
expand_more
The subject of this still life is a paper automata depicting Uccello’s painting the Battle of San Romano in the National Gallery London. An old photo of the artist and his brother play fighting is placed to balance the picture but also contributes to the silly theatre of the staged battle. The Manikin adds to the theme of puppetry in some sense. Trompe l’ oeil is also another more subtle theme that runs thought the painting with the illusion of different surface layers.

Artists Statement
Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
