This painting features a large ornate vase overflowing with an arrangement of colorful flowers, including roses, peonies, and poppies. The color palette is vibrant and varied, with hues of red, pink, blue, purple, white, and green. Positioned in the center, the vase is adorned with gold embellishments, including a small carving of a person on its front. The vase stands on a marble surface that also holds a pineapple and peaches to the right. Several leaves and clusters of green grapes rest on the left side of the marble. The light source is at the upper left, illuminating the flowers and casting dark shadows behind them. The background of the painting is dark gray.

About the artist

Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744–1818) was a French painter best known for her exquisite still-life paintings of flowers, fruits, and household objects. Born in Paris, France, she developed her artistic skills at a young age and became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1770, an exceptional achievement for a woman at the time. Her work was admired for its precise details, rich colors, and skillful depiction of textures, particularly in paintings featuring flowers, porcelain, silverware, and musical instruments. Vallayer-Coster received royal patronage, including support from Queen Marie Antoinette, and exhibited her paintings at the prestigious Paris Salon. Despite the challenges faced by women artists in the eighteenth century, she established a successful career and became one of the leading still-life painters of her era. Today, she is remembered as an important figure in French art history.
