About the artist
Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684) was a Dutch painter best known for his elaborate still-life paintings of flowers, fruits, food, and luxurious objects. Born in Utrecht in the Dutch Republic, he later worked in Leiden, Antwerp, and other cities in the Netherlands and Flanders. De Heem developed a distinctive style that combined the rich colors and detailed realism of Dutch painting with the decorative elegance of Flemish art. His compositions often featured grapes, lemons, oysters, glassware, silver dishes, and flowers, carefully arranged to demonstrate his exceptional skill in depicting textures, light, and reflections. Many of his paintings also included symbolic references to the passage of time and the temporary nature of wealth and beauty. De Heem became one of the most celebrated still-life painters of the Dutch Golden Age and influenced generations of artists.
