About the artist

Abraham Mignon (1640–1679) was a German-Dutch painter best known for his detailed still-life paintings of flowers, fruits, and small animals. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, he moved to the Netherlands as a child and studied painting under Jacob Marrel, a flower painter who introduced him to the art of still-life composition. Mignon later settled in Utrecht, where he became associated with the Dutch Golden Age of painting. His works often featured elaborate arrangements of flowers, grapes, insects, and other natural objects, rendered with remarkable precision and vibrant colors. He was particularly admired for his ability to capture textures, delicate petals, and the play of light on different surfaces. Mignon's paintings sometimes incorporated symbolic elements, reflecting themes of nature, beauty, and the transience of life. Today, he is remembered as an important still-life painter of the seventeenth century.
