Still Life with Flowers

About the artist

Henri Fantin-Latour (1836–1904) was a French painter and lithographer best known for his delicate still-life paintings of flowers and his group portraits of artists and writers. Born in Grenoble, France, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and developed a style that combined realism with a subtle sense of atmosphere. Fantin-Latour gained recognition for his carefully arranged floral compositions, which showcased his exceptional attention to detail, soft lighting, and harmonious colors. He was also associated with leading artists and writers of his time, including Édouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and other members of the avant-garde art community. His famous group portrait Homage to Delacroix (1864) celebrated the influence of the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. Although he remained independent of the major Impressionist movement, his work reflected the artistic changes taking place in nineteenth-century France. Today, Fantin-Latour is remembered as one of the leading still-life painters of his era.
