Still Life with Flowers

About the artist

Balthasar van der Ast (1593–1657) was a Dutch painter best known for his still-life paintings of flowers, fruits, shells, and insects. Born in Middelburg in the Netherlands, he trained under his brother-in-law, the renowned flower painter Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder. Van der Ast later worked in Utrecht and Delft, where he developed a distinctive style characterized by meticulous detail, balanced compositions, and vivid colors. His paintings often featured exotic shells, delicate flowers, and carefully arranged fruit, reflecting the seventeenth-century Dutch fascination with nature and collecting rare objects. He also incorporated small insects and lizards into his compositions, adding realism and symbolic meaning. Van der Ast played an important role in the development of Dutch still-life painting and influenced later generations of artists. Today, he is remembered as one of the leading still-life painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
