About the artist

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor best known for his distinctive portraits and nude paintings featuring elongated faces, long necks, and almond-shaped eyes. Born in Livorno, Italy, he studied art in Florence and Venice before moving to Paris in 1906, where he became part of the city's vibrant modern art community. Initially interested in sculpture, he was influenced by African art, ancient sculpture, and the works of Paul Cézanne. From 1914 onward, he focused primarily on painting, creating expressive portraits of friends, artists, and his companion, Jeanne Hébuterne. Although he struggled financially and received limited recognition during his lifetime, his unique artistic style gained widespread appreciation after his death. Modigliani died in Paris in 1920 at the age of 35 from tuberculosis-related illness and is remembered as an important figure in early twentieth-century modern art.
