About the artist

Johan Rohde (1856–1935) was a Danish painter, designer, and influential figure in the development of modern Danish art. Initially trained in medicine, he later pursued art and became known for his contributions to painting, furniture design, and decorative arts. Rohde helped challenge the conservative traditions of the Danish art establishment and supported new artistic ideas through his involvement with the Free Exhibition, an alternative artists' association founded in Copenhagen in 1891. His work reflected an interest in modern design, refined craftsmanship, and artistic innovation.
