About the artist

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a Dutch-Indonesian painter and graphic artist known for his contributions to Symbolism, Pointillism, and Art Nouveau. Born in Purworejo, Java, in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia), he moved to the Netherlands as a child and studied art in Amsterdam and Brussels. Throughout his career, Toorop experimented with various artistic styles, developing a distinctive approach that combined flowing decorative lines, spiritual imagery, and influences from Javanese culture. One of his best-known works is the poster Delftsche Slaolie (1894), celebrated for its elegant Art Nouveau design. During the 1890s, he became a leading figure in the Symbolist movement, creating mysterious and expressive compositions. After converting to Roman Catholicism in 1905, he increasingly focused on religious paintings and portraits. Toorop is remembered as an influential artist who helped introduce modern European art movements to the Netherlands while incorporating elements of his Indonesian heritage.
