About the artist
Carleton E. Watkins (1829–1916) was an American photographer best known for his remarkable landscape photographs of Yosemite Valley and the American West. Born in Oneonta, New York, he moved to California in 1851 and learned photography in San Francisco. In 1861, he made his first major photographic expedition to Yosemite, capturing its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and vast natural landscapes. His large-format photographs helped bring national attention to Yosemite and contributed to efforts to protect the valley. Watkins also documented California’s mining industry, cities, and coastal scenery. He is remembered as a pioneer of American landscape photography whose work helped shape the early conservation movement.
