Honesty Bar by Chris Macauley is an original oil on canvas measuring 33.85 x 33.85 inches. Set within the glow of illuminated bottles, the work captures a moment of quiet connection between viewer and subject. The young woman at the counter is framed by reflections and shadows, her scarf and glasses softening the polished atmosphere. About The Artwork

This work is inspired by Manets painting, Bar at the Folies Bergere and there is a tradition amongst artists to create a picture that is related in some way to a classic piece of art and then the term “after” is placed in the title. As in Manets painting the young women waits to serve the man reflected in the mirror (in this painting, portrait of the artist), this puts the viewer in the same position as the man in the reflection. Primarily the painting deals with the luminosity caused by the brightly lit coloured bottles contrasting with the low-level ambient light that surrounds the women’s face.

Born in Manchester. Studied art in Blackpool and Newcastle. Worked in the building trade for a decade, began teaching art in Leicester.

Artists Statement

Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
