About The Artwork
expand_more
The classically-trained painter Joseph Anton Koch was a father figure to many German-speaking artists who visited Rome in the early nineteenth century. He renewed the genre of heroic landscape painting, which had been established by the seventeenth-century French masters Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. Koch’s fame rests on this iconic image, which he referred to as a “Greek landscape.” It is the fourth and final version of a composition he first painted in 1805 (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe).

About the artist

Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839) was an Austrian-born painter known for his idealized landscapes inspired by classical art and the natural beauty of Italy. He became an important figure in the German Romantic movement and was associated with the Nazarene artistic circle in Rome. Koch's paintings often featured majestic mountains, dramatic valleys, ancient ruins, and biblical or mythological themes. He combined detailed observations of nature with carefully structured compositions, creating landscapes that conveyed harmony, grandeur, and spiritual meaning. His work influenced the development of nineteenth-century European landscape painting.
