About the artist

Walt Kuhn (1877–1949) was an American painter, illustrator, and cartoonist born in New York City. He began selling drawings to magazines at the age of fifteen and later studied art in Paris and Munich, where he encountered European Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. After returning to New York, he worked for various magazines and gained recognition as both an illustrator and a painter. Kuhn later became an important figure in American modern art, particularly for his expressive portraits of circus performers and his role in organizing the 1913 Armory Show.
