About the artist

Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831–1915) was a Dutch marine painter and a prominent member of the Hague School. He was best known for his realistic and atmospheric paintings of the sea, fishing boats, and coastal life in the Netherlands. Mesdag skillfully captured the changing moods of the ocean through subtle colors, natural light, and expressive skies. One of his most famous works is the Panorama Mesdag, a monumental panoramic painting of the seaside village of Scheveningen. His art played an important role in the development of Dutch marine painting in the nineteenth century.
