About the artist

Francis Frith (1822–1898) was an English photographer and publisher renowned for his photographs of ancient monuments, landscapes, and historical sites in the Middle East and Great Britain. Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, he developed an interest in photography in the early 1850s and became a founding member of the Liverpool Photographic Society in 1853. Between 1856 and 1860, he made several expeditions to Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and other parts of the Middle East, capturing remarkable images of pyramids, temples, and archaeological sites. In 1859, he established his own photographic publishing company, which later produced an extensive collection documenting towns and villages across Britain. Frith is remembered as a pioneer of travel photography whose work preserved valuable visual records of historical landmarks and everyday life during the Victorian era.
