About the artist

Todros Geller (1889–1949) was a Jewish American painter, printmaker, illustrator, and teacher born in Vinnytsia, in present-day Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. He immigrated to Montreal, Canada, with his family in 1906 and later settled in Chicago, where he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago under artist George Bellows. Geller became known for his woodcuts, engravings, paintings, and stained-glass designs, often exploring Jewish culture, religious traditions, urban life, and social justice. He was an influential figure in Chicago's art community and was widely recognized as a leading Jewish American artist. His works are held in collections at prominent institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
