About the artist

Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904) was an American painter known for his salt marsh landscapes, seascapes, and detailed paintings of hummingbirds, orchids, lotus blossoms, and other still-life subjects. Born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, he initially painted portraits before developing an interest in landscape art through his connections with artists of the Hudson River School. He later traveled to tropical regions, where he found inspiration for his paintings of birds and flowers. He became especially renowned for his atmospheric depictions of New England salt marshes and magnolias arranged on velvet cloth.
