Autumn On the Hudson River

About the artist

Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823–1900) was an American landscape painter and architect associated with the Hudson River School. He was best known for his vibrant depictions of the American countryside, particularly during autumn, when he captured the brilliant colors of changing leaves, rolling hills, rivers, and wooded landscapes. Cropsey believed that the natural beauty of America reflected the country's greatness and often portrayed landscapes with remarkable detail and luminous colors. His paintings helped popularize autumn scenery as a distinctive subject in American landscape art.
