About the artist

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) was an English Romantic painter renowned for his dramatic landscapes, seascapes, and atmospheric use of light and color. Often regarded as one of the greatest landscape painters in British art, Turner explored the power of nature through scenes of storms, sunsets, ships, and mountains. His loose brushwork and expressive treatment of light anticipated aspects of Impressionism and influenced the development of modern art. Among his celebrated works are The Fighting Temeraire and Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway.
