About The Artwork
expand_more
Thomas Cole renders Crawford Notch, a deep valley in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, aglow in autumnal splendor. Cole likely selected the site less for its beauty than for its association with human frailty against the unpredictable forces of nature.
In 1826, a landslide in this valley forced a family to flee their home. They built a temporary shelter nearby, but the next night they died in an avalanche. To emphasize his message about the power of nature, Cole placed tiny figures on horseback, in a stagecoach, outside the white inn against the looming mountains. Threatening storm clouds and twisted, chopped trees heighten the scene’s drama.
