About the artist

Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633–1707) was a Dutch Golden Age marine painter renowned for his detailed depictions of ships, naval battles, and maritime life. His paintings captured the movement of the sea, changing weather, and the intricate details of sailing vessels. Alongside his father, Willem van de Velde the Elder, he helped establish marine painting as an important genre in Dutch art, documenting the Netherlands’ rich seafaring history.
