About The Artwork

This is the actual site of the truly iconic painting “The Hey Wain” by John Constable. The artist has approached the scene in a way as if seen for the first time, not replicating the style of painting in any way and noticing that the house (called Willi Lots house) is considerably longer and less compressed in real life than in Constable’s picture.

Born in Manchester. Studied art in Blackpool and Newcastle. Worked in the building trade for a decade, began teaching art in Leicester.

Artists Statement

Expressing light through color and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. Chris Macauley is not a subject specific painter. Whether he is working on still life, portraiture or landscape, he is always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.
